A first wall was raised with the poured earth technique, it is one of the first large scale constructions with this technique in the Iberian Peninsula.

After a first week of intense experimentation the groups were ready to start designing their own mixes with three different soils and experiment with formwork.

On the beginning of October we finally gathered 11 participants from different countries at the Oficinas da Ceramica e da Terra in Montemor-o-Novo, ready to explore poured earth knowledge along the next four weeks.

After four weeks of training, building, explaining, redesigning and sharing, it is finally possible to use the barbecue facilities that AK0 designed as output of the practical exercise of workshop Design and Build with Prefabricated Rammed Earth.

The third LearnBIØN-workshop started this week in Benevento

Exploring this innovative technique that allows a building site to be fast and similar to a conventional one is the aim of this workshop.

After telling you how the work was initiated during the Workshop BIØN² #2 Design & Build for Disassembly, here some updates on the results the team achieved during the initiative’s last week.

The workshop participants will contribute to the realisation of a set of fix furniture for the new barbecue area of Caffè dell'Orto - Fattoria Sociale Orto di Casa Betania, a social enterprise that uses urban farming as an opportunity for persons with disabilities or social difficulties to have an independent live. All the structures will be built with raw earth, namely with the technique of rammed earth.

From 19th to 30th of July 2021 10 trainees attendend the Workshop BIØN² #2 Design&Build for Disassembly in the municipality of San Ginesio, province of Macerata, Italy. The team was welcomed by the members of G-Lab laboratorio di idee, a local youth association, by the municipality and by the project’s main stakeholde, the prior of the confraternity of the Sacconi of San Ginesio. In this edition the workshop is also one of a cycle of three workshops of the Master Circular Architecture: Shapes and Methodologies of the University of Camerino.

When our Italian partner-organisation AK0 - architettura a kilometro zero started its cooperation project on sustainable architecture in Côte d'Ivoire in 2017, one of the goals was to train local craftsmen and inhabitants and enable them to take advantage of locally available resources such as raw earth, natural fibres and centuries of non-codified yet deep and precious knowledge.

There is an emergency in finding an alternative to cement concrete and one of the solutions may be just under our feet: earth material! Even if it's compressive strength isn't equivalent to concrete's, in a lot of cases it can be enough and thus represent a real alternative.

The workshop main focus is to build for Disassembly, with reused and recycled materials. A great way to lower the impact on the climate, and upcycle materials to becoming useful again. The workshop will be held in San Genesio, Macerata, Italy on the 19-30th of July.

We have looked at allt the partners different approaches, lessons and aspirations on people-led development. By using the experiences from Bi0n I, the training conclude some ways for the partners to improve the placemaking process and further strengthen people-led development.

Bion-partner ARCò from Milan just completed another international cooperation that fruited an inspiring building in the Albanian town of Divjake.

We are gathering the feedback from different actors that took part in building the cordwood building in Sweden in 2017. Revisiting the structure and recalling the work makes us proud of the communal effort, a true team completed it! It has been interesting to follow the development and especially how the building is a piece of a larger puzzle of locally produced food.
